Weeping Woman of West Virginia
Parkersburg, WV

In Parkersburg, West Virginia there is the legend of the statue of “The Weeping Woman.” The statue is located in Riverview Cemetery, and watches over the family plot of the Jacksons, a prominent family in Parkersburg who were cousins to famed Civil War General Stonewall Jackson. A number of unexplained powers are associated with this curious statue. Some say that at night during a full moon, the statue stands up and walks through the graveyard, weeping over the conflict between North and South. Others claim to have seen her move and have photographed her hands in different positions….

Because I am suffering cabin fever terribly, I’ve been studying my book of trails and planning hikes for when the weather is better - to keep my sanity.

I miss the trails more than one would miss a lover, simply taking a breath feels constricted…

This is a photo I took recently at the Sweet Springs Sanitarium in West Virginia. It started out as a resort, then a rehab center, then a mental health institution. It’s such a beautiful place with its brick detail, Greek Columns, and pretty lace curtains. That is until you see the bottom floor with its decrepit unkept doors and the bars on the windows. It’s crazy to think that a place so beautiful can hold so much pain. With this shoot I wanted to capture the darkness behind the beauty of the Sanitarium. Even just walking around the grounds there is a serene and unsettling feeling in the beauty this beautiful structure projects.
